[ Ming Yi glances up from where he's been separating loquats into halves for eating, slumped into a chair within reach comfortably with his legs straight out, but doesn't seem particularly bothered by Meg's dramatic wallowing. ]
Aren't you basically doing that now? [ He offers her half of a loquat, arm flopped over the side of the chair to reach. ] It's not exactly a conventional indulgence, that's for sure.
[ In deadpan: ] "Seek the root of your despair; its cause, its results, the emotions it sparks within you and the things you are motivated to do as a result."
[ rolls her eyes! but she's taking that loquat, thank you. ]
I know the cause of my despair, thanks, and the whole point of being here was to get away from it. And now we're supposed to just... wallow in it while everyone else has a good time? No, thank you.
[ A hum - yes, very funny, he's a comedian - and he moves to split another one, tossing the seeds as he goes through the fruits he has into a bowl because he's not a heathen. ]
Apparently we can also cause it in other people, and it'll count. [ So, there's that. He's fine with that. ] I spoke with Despair in private about it - the Avatars don't gain anything directly from it, like a god does worship and offerings, and are instead here to just offer guidance for the situation.
Hence "the root of your despair." I would have thought the root of mine had been resolved, but I suppose not.
...Really makes you wonder what they're here for then, doesn't it? If the Avatar of Despair doesn't get anything from us eating our feelings, then what's the point, you know? What are they even getting out of this deal?
[ she sighs. ]
The root of despair, huh. So if we dredge up all the bad moments from our pasts, we should be fine. [ she takes a bite of the loquat. ] It'll make for a lovely walk down memory lane.
Something on their end that they can't divulge, I imagine. A contract. [ Me looking at the execution today and the "entertainment" part, squinting really hard at the implications of this. ] I didn't ask further, though it probably wouldn't hurt to try and know more considering our indulgences must contribute to something.
[ Not that it'll change his means of indulgence, probably. ]
Oh, it'll be miserable for everyone, I'm sure. [ dryly ] We'll reflect on every embarrassing thing that's happened to us, the shame, the suffering, a great time.
Maybe it is something worth asking about. I'd like to know how they'd even consider despair something worth indulging in, anyway.
[ but that's a later problem. ]
Mm, you know, I think I'm liking the whole causing other people despair a lot more. There have to be some interesting ways to do that, right? I'm long over letting it get to me.
Sins as a concept isn't foreign to me, but these specific ones being the focus are a little more different than I'm used to, so I wouldn't be able to say why despair.
[ Here they are, indulging anyways. ]
Anything that would cause despair in general, I imagine. Embarrassing them, dragging them down, reminding them of some failing on their part.
[ Voting a particular way to upset people or just to put them in line for being on the chopping block....... ]

[ but since meg isn’t planning on getting close to too many people here… ]
Still, all that sounds a lot better to me than the whole “woe is me!” schtick. I don’t know about you, but that’s never really been my style.
